What the Bible really says about waiting for the right person
Jordan Anthony Pugh
Struggling with singleness or waiting on the right relationship? Here's what the Bible actually says about waiting for the right person—and how to do it with purpose and peace.
“God, When Will It Be My Turn?”
If you’ve ever asked that question, this post is for you.
Waiting on the right person—while honoring God in your singleness—is one of the most challenging and faith-building seasons you can walk through. It’s also a season where everyone seems to have an opinion. have you heared these statements before:
-
“Maybe you're being too picky.”
-
“Just focus on yourself and it'll happen.”
-
“You need to put yourself out there more.”
But here’s the real question:
What does the Bible actually say about waiting for the right person?
Let’s look at some powerful truths from Scripture—plus how to wait well without wasting time, losing hope, or compromising your values.
1. Waiting Is Not a Punishment—It's Preparation
In the Bible, waiting is often the space where God prepares people for purpose.
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength…”
— Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
Waiting isn’t passive. It’s not about sitting still and being bored—it’s about active dependence on God while He works in you and around you.
Just like God prepared Ruth before Boaz, David before the crown, and Esther before the palace—God may be preparing both you and the one you’re waiting for.
2. Your Worth Isn’t Defined by Your Relationship Status
Culture will make you feel like you're “behind” if you're single past a certain age. But the Bible? It never does that. What does God say?
“You are complete in Him…”
— Colossians 2:10
Marriage is a gift—but so is singleness (see 1 Corinthians 7). You’re not waiting to become whole—you already are in Christ. The right person doesn’t complete you; they complement the purpose God already placed in you. This doesent mean you don't care or stop looking, it means you wait to see who wants to follow Christ with you.
3. God Cares More About Who You're Becoming Than Who You're Attracting
Many people focus on finding the “right” person instead of becoming the "right"person. But the Bible emphasizes character over chemistry.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
— Proverbs 4:23
Are you guarding your heart or giving it away too easily?
Use this time to:
-
Grow spiritually
-
Heal emotionally
-
Deepen your relationship with God
-
Align your desires with His will
4. Waiting Well Means Trusting God’s Timing, Not Forcing Your Own
Sometimes, the hardest part is watching others get what you're praying for—while you're still waiting. That’s real.
But remember:
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:11
God’s delays are not denials. They are often divine protection or redirection. Just because it hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean God isn’t working behind the scenes. Trust Him dear friend.
5. You Don't Have to Settle to Be Loved
God’s best won’t require you to:
-
Lower your standards
-
Compromise your purity
-
Silence your calling
-
Ignore red flags
“Every good and perfect gift is from above…”
— James 1:17
If it’s from God, it’ll honor Him and you. I know many of you are tired of wating and have stopped believing. if so, somewhere along the line you and I have stopped looking at things the way the scripture our describes. Keep watiing on the Lord and serve Him with all of your heart.

Final Thoughts: Waiting Is Sacred, Not Second-Class
If you’re in a season of waiting, you’re not forgotten. You’re not behind. And you’re not invisible to God.
You’re exactly where He wants you—being shaped, refined, and prepared.
So keep your standards. Keep your faith. Keep your heart soft.
And remember: The right person won’t just feel right—they’ll be sent by God, in the right time.
